Meeting Client for Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Testing and Troubleshooting Guide

Last week i took some extra time to read carefully the OCS 2007 R2 RTM Planning workbook available here.

There are lot of new features people are talking about like

  • Dial-in audioconferencing,
  • Desktop sharing,
  • Persistent group chat,
  • Attendant console and delegation,
  • Session Initiation Protocol trunking,
  • Response group,
  • Mobility and single-number reach,
  • APIs and Visual Studio integration,
  • etc, etc.

But this document grab my attention on some contents, like on step 2.1 Key changes from Office Communications Server 2007

a) The Update Server no longer requires Windows SharePoint Services
it uses file share directory - Thank you for this one!!!, all those that implemented Update Server on OCS 2007, know what i mean ;)

b) QoE Server becomes Monitoring Server and includes CDR functionality that was in the Archiving Role
QoE and Archiving, become together,

c) Archiving Server no longer collects CDRs
See previous step,

d) Enterprise Edition Expanded Topology is no longer a preferred deployment scenario At least has no wizard. Consolidated Topology is the prefered (for fault tolerance).

e) The Consolidated Edge role is now the only supported edge topology
to have fault tolerance and load balancing simple install multiple servers,

f) A publicly routable IP address is no longer needed in a site with only a single Edge Server
Another one to Thank!!! But just where there is just one server.

g) Edge Server port requirements have been changed
"The A/V Edge Service requires the port range from 50,000 through 59,999 to be opened inbound only if you are federating with organizations running previous versions of Office Communications Server 2007.
If you will be federating with companies that run Office Communications Server 2007 and earlier, you must open this port range for both RTP/TCP and RTP/UDP, and for both inbound and outbound connections.
Otherwise, you can close these inbound ports, and leave the port range open only for outbound connections over RTP/TCP."

And there are also "new roles" see 2.2 New Roles and Capabilities in Office Communications Server 2007 R2
